Skuzzle - The man behind Skuzzle Motorsport

Nick Bailey

Software Tech Lead

Formerly a mechanical engineer and the owner of a motorsport tuning business. These days I'm tech lead of a software team instead of a race team — the job is more similar than you'd expect.

Nick crouched in the snow, tuning ECU calibration on a hovercraft from a laptop balanced on a workbench.
Tuning a hovercraft in the snow. Long story.

I started out in IT support, spent a decade or more as a mechanical engineer building and racing cars, and eventually found my way back to software — which is where I'd started, teaching myself BASIC as a kid.

The racing years as Skuzzle Motorsport, a Mazda MX5 performance tuning business I built from nothing into one of the better-known names for it in the UK. I closed it in 2020 to get some family time back, and moved into software full-time. It turns out the job barely changed: something's broken, you work out why, you fix it properly, and then you explain it to someone who doesn't want the jargon.

I'm currently Software Tech Lead at Activate Group building the systems behind claims, body shop and fleet management software — mostly C#, .NET, and containerised microservices. I still can't leave a broken process alone until it's fixed properly, which is either my best trait or my worst one depending who you ask.

Based in Derbyshire, UK. If you want a fuller story — the good bits and the odd hovercraft — see things I've done, or just say hello.
